Hi! My name is Avalon and I grew up in a small town with 12 brothers and sisters. We lived in a 2 bedroom house with one bathroom. I usually slept on a couch in the LR, and some of the others had a bed outside in the summers. I really didn’t realize how very little we had until I was a teenager. I knew we had a lot of medical problems and 3 of the children died at an early age. I never dreamed that other girls had more than 1 pair of shoes and a couple of dresses. We seemed to have some kind of food most of the times.(A lot of beans spaghetti, and potatoes), and we never went out to eat. We had very little spending money, but we did odd jobs in order to get money. I did babysitting, sold fruit from our two large fruit trees. My brothers and I even picked cotton for the cotton farmers.
I came to realize our family was looked down upon by many people in our town as that “poor family with all those kids.” That was one incentive for me to prove that I could achieve something worth while in spite of
obstacles. I worked hard to get good grades and graduated as salutatorian of my high school class. I became involved in music, drama, and sports. I was especially fascinated with water sports so I spent a lot of time in the school pool as well as public pools. I enjoyed diving and swimming meets and taught swimming lessons and became a lifeguard. I have always spent a lot of time near water, pools, lakes beaches, and bays.
