USE CAUTION NEAR THE WATER
WATER, we drink it, clean with it, play in it, swim in it, shower and bathe in it, we also boat in it and water ski in it. Water is one of our worlds most useful elements, but under certain circumstances water can be deadly. For instance, 100s of small children and even adults die in water related accidents every year. Many times it may be caused by being unprepared or not learning the proper skills needed to be safe when around water, or it may be because of distraction for even a few minutes.
One summer I arranged for our family to go on an outing at a huge public pool and picnic area where we would play in the water of a place called “Hot Springs”, which had it’s water source from a warm natural underground spring and was located in the desert in South Eastern Arizona. At the time, I had 6 children.
As I had taught most of them how to swim, I felt comfortable with our situation. Since I love to swim and dive off of the high dive, I assigned the care of a 3 year old daughter to the older children while I spent a little time in the deep end. It was evening and was difficult to see all parts of this very large pool. After swimming for a while, I had a feeling that I should check the children at the shallow end of the pool, especially the 3 year old. When I arrived I did not see her and asked where she was. I was told that she had gone to sit on the edge of the pool and watch them play, but she was not there! I immediately started back to the deep end. It was hard to tell who anyone was because of the large amount of people in the pool. As I approached the 3/4 point, I saw a small head bobbing up and down in the water and a pair of frightened eyes that could barely be seen as they began to sink in the deep water. It was my daughter! She had followed someone along the side to the deep end thinking she would find me and not realizing the danger slipped into the water. I arrived just in time to save my daughter, and learned that an accident can happen within a matter of minutes. So please use caution around the water, especially with small children. Now I spend time at my bay where I feel save and secure and have the opportunity to make some money too.
